Donation for Smithton High School

Local community charity, Treasure Chest, have presented Smithton High School with a $12465.00 cheque that will go towards purchasing a new combi oven for their School Lunch Project.

The high school was selected as one of 15 Tasmanian schools to be part of the 2022 School Lunch Project as part of the government funded, School Food Matters. The school’s food service staff have been heating and serving up to 100 healthy lunches for year seven to ten students, three days per week, that are dietician approved recipes. The food is sourced from Loaves and Fishes Tasmania who serve up to 6500 meals per week throughout the state. Tasmania is the first Australian state to trial a funded school lunch project. The project is the passion of school food pioneer and Churchill Fellow, Julie Dunbabin, who saw the value of state-sponsored lunch programs during a tour of Europe, the United States and Japan in 2019.
