A spate of vandalism in the community over the last few weeks has the potential to cost more than just council dollars as money for other community opportunities is utilised for repairs and preventative measures.

An ongoing issue with vandals at the Smithton Skate Park has seen the council owned facility locked up as the result of reckless acts.

“Vandalism costs community opportunity, it is a shame that just a few can spoil it for many,” Mayor Daryl Quilliam said.

Damage to the area includes a broken window, broken CCTV cameras, damaged fencing as well as glass and rubbish littering the area.

“Since stage one restriction has lifted, we have noticed an increase in vandalism around Circular Head,” Mayor Quilliam said.

“Stopping these disrespectful acts will prevent the loss of thousands of dollars for preventative measures and re-sewing grass.”

The acts of vandalism during May included damage to the overflow carpark at the Smithton Boat Ramp on East Esplanade and torn up grass at the ANZAC Memorial [Kings] Park in Stanley. 

“Please ensure you report [vandalism] if you witness it,” Mayor Quilliam said.
