Smithton has now gone without court sit-ins for over two years following a hiatus of the process in 2020.

Court sittings used to sit at the Smithton Court Building behind the library which ceased ‘as a result of the high expense’. In September 2014, a statement from the State’s Minister for Justice said, “Smithton has been one of the most expensive country courts to operate, costing around $22,000 per year for monthly sittings.”
