Supporting women worldwide

Gill Buxton from the Devonport chapter of Days for Girls spoke at the Rotary Club of Smithton meeting Tuesday evening, August 13.

Days for Girls organisation provides sanitary products for women in need, in particular in third world conditions, by providing access to menstrual care, education and everyday items.

Gill spoke to the Rotary members about the results delivered by the local chapter and how they have changed the lives of young women around the world.

Photos showed their distribution to countries including Africa, India and Nepal, and how difficult the conditions are for women in those areas.

Local Rotary members Cherylle Pedley and Lynnette Savage have been helping with Days for Girls for by sewing items that will be sent around the world to women in need.

The pair were interested in helping anyway they could and enjoy that sewing brings them together to helps women in harsh conditions.

November 2018, Gillian and her team delivered 400 kits to young women, and over the last four years have delivered over 1000 kits, making a considerable difference.

Gillian explained that one kit could be used by a young woman for between three to five years.

“Over three years, this would result in saving eight months of school that would have been missed due to periods,” said Gillian.

“This immediately improved education outcomes for the young women and allowed them to be advocates and stay in their local communities.”

Days for Girls is supported by donations and invite anyone looking to help by sewing or assisting the group to contact Gill on 0418 384 032, or contacting the Rotary Club of Smithton and speaking with Cherylle.
