Come on, clean up

Come on, clean up

While many revelled in recreational activities in our great outdoors during the June long weekend, Rocky Cape Lions Club put on gloves to keep our slice of paradise pristine.

Scouring the side of the Bass Highway at Detention River and cleaning up nearby Myoora Park, the club collected six bags of rubbish in 45 minutes.

President Victoria Cochrane says this is the worst state the club has seen the park in for some time.

“It is such a beautiful area, the river is so lovely and well worth keeping tidy but it’s disheartening to see people being disrespectful,” she says.

The area is used by visitors and locals alike – something the club likes to see.

“It’s a popular spot for people passing through.”

As custodians of Myoora Park, Lions members maintain the area by removing debris from surrounding gum trees, cleaning the barbecue and emptying bins for visitors.

However an increase in litter in the park and on the side of the road has prompted the club to call on community members to play their part and pick up after themselves.

“Our message to all people is to be respectful while they’re in the area.”

Rocky Cape Lions Club members Pam Prior, Anne Fagg, Dorothy Harvey, incoming president Richard Cochrane and outgoing president Victoria Cochrane spent the long weekend cleaning up.
