Unsung heroes

Circular Head’s servant hearted were acknowledged during National Volunteer Week (May 20 to 26) on Friday.

Those who selflessly give of their time to help out others were thanked during an event held at Wyndarra Centre.

Circular Head has always had more than it’s fair share of volunteers.

Results from the Australian Bureau of Statistics’ 2016 Census reveal 23.7 per cent of Circular Head residents have volunteered through an organisation or group in the 12 months prior.

For Tasmania, 21.3 per cent say they have volunteered in the last 12 months, whereas the national average sits at 19 per cent.

“It doesn’t surprise me at all,” says Mayor Daryl Quilliam.

“The volunteers in Circular Head are absolutely wonderful, services such as Wyndarra wouldn’t be what they are without the help of volunteers.”

Mayor Quilliam acknowledged that for most, volunteering goes further than helping out for a few hours a week.

“Many of these people are helping Wyndarra’s [clients] through issues they face in day to day life,” he says.

“They [act as] someone to lean on.”

To lend a helping hand, drop in to Wyndarra Centre at 43 Smith Street, Smithton.
