Nursing ambitions

Becoming a mum has set Kiara Thomas on a new study path.

The Soroptimist International of Circular Head Scholarship recipient will begin a Bachelor of Nursing at the University of Tasmania this year.

Kiara moved to Circular Head two years ago, and welcomed son William into the world with husband Kane shortly after.

She has since dedicated her days to raising her little love, and travelling the state to seek medical attention from specialists for William’s autism and anaphylaxis.

An interest in nursing sparked while watching those in the profession.

“I just thought, I need to do more,” she says.

The 24-year-old recently completed a health and community care bridging course and has achieved an Advanced Diploma of Nutritional Medicine.

While Kiara will complete most of her studies by correspondence, she will need to attend one day on campus in Launceston every week.

Driving from Smithton, she will drop off William at daycare in Burnie in the morning before making the return drive home at the end of the day.

“It will be a challenge,” she says of balancing motherhood, study and hours on the road.

“But I know what I want to do and I’m willing to do everything to get there.”
