Success on the horizon

Success on the horizon

Lewis Nicholls is this year’s recipient of the Mayor’s Education Fund bursary.

The 19-year-old accepted the scholarship at the Circular Head Celebration of Education event on February 1.

Growing up in Marrawah, Lewis attended Redpa Primary School and Smithton High School, then later Hellyer College in Burnie.

In 2017, Lewis achieved an outstanding ATAR of 98.5, placing him within the top 100 scores in the state.

The Marrawah local returned to his hometown after completing college for a gap year.

During this time, Lewis worked on the family farm and behind the bar at the Marrawah Tavern to save for his future.

Moving to Sandy Bay in Hobart this year, Lewis will attend the University of Tasmania to study a Bachelor of Engineering with Honours.

A passion for science and drive to problem solve set him on this path: “I’d like to look at alternative energy generation,” he says.

“I think we have to find alternative ways to power the world.”

While he is particularly interested in this field, he says he will keep all options open and is keen to discover what career pathways are out there.

Lewis is an avid sportsperson who plays in the local cricket and football leagues, and instigated a badminton competition in Marrawah. He is also an accomplished pianist, having recently completed his grade six exam.
