Clinical performance seals season

Perry’s Quality Meats Smithton Stars secured the Burnie Cricket League A Reserve premiership in Smithton on Saturday after an undefeated season.

Captain Sean Ryan won the toss and elected to bat with openers Aaron Tuxworth and Ben Revell starting on the right foot. The pair cruised to 46 runs before Revell was dismissed for 19.

Revell handed the reigns to Brent Burgess who handled the pressure with ease, taking it upon himself to hit two sixes over the man at deep square leg.

With three boundaries to his name, Burgess had to go for 26, making way for the captain.

Ryan and Tuxworth combined for another 100 plus partnership before Tuxworth was dismissed for the second time since December on 67.

With 186 runs on the board and wickets in hand, it was time to pick up the pace.

Ryan was dismissed for a game high 74 with nine boundaries to his name while handy middle order runs came from Jacob Finch (11) and Logan Smith (8).

Connor Smith batted aggressively at the bottom of the order and managed 32 runs off 19 balls to take the total to a respectable 8/263.

In the chase, Yolla looked comfortable, managing four an over for the first 10 overs without loss.

The breakthrough came from Ryan (2/31) following a ripper catch from keeper Tuxworth.

Ryan then claimed the poles of the number three batsman by lbw for a duck and the momentum shifted.

Scoreboard pressure from Burgess (2/6) as well as a third ball wicket from Cameron Revell (1/5) had the visitors in strife.

Two strong catches in cover to Logan Smith as well as one on the boundary kept pressure high.

Lachie Oates was given the chance to bowl late and looked unplayable. He cleaned up the middle order with ease and dismissed the number 11 hit wicket to bring the day’s play to a close with 23 overs in hand. The violent collapse saw Yolla defeated, having lost 10/39.

The BCL awarded the player of the match to Sean Ryan for his match-winning 74 runs at number four. Meanwhile, the Stars acknowledged Brent Burgess for his brilliant effort with ball in hand as well as Connor Smith for his classy lower order hitting.

The premiership win sees the Stars promoted to the BCL A Grade next season.
