Poss ready to pounce

Jacqlyn Poss is thriving as the new Smithton Saints import.

Having played college basketball for the University of Denver in Colorado and then a season in Luxembourg, Poss is enjoying the challenges that come with playing in the North West Basketball Union.

“It’s definitely a different experience here,” she says.

“I’m a person that does what the team needs and here that is consistently putting up points and making plays each game.”

The talented American, originally from Minnesota, says the pressure of being the sole import is something she’s had to adjust to but is enjoying.

“I look at pressure as an opportunity to perform, as a challenge to prove I’m capable of doing what I need to.”

Poss averages 24.27 points a game, almost half the side’s average points this season. She also averages 5.91 rebounds a game.

Poss’ ultimate goal has been to forge a career on the court from the start.

She highlights the intricacies of the cultures and playing styles of the different countries she’s played in as her biggest challenge.

“The [style of play] changes so much between countries but that’s what makes it fun – to see the game played from a different perspective.”

The import speaks highly of her time in Smithton so far, highlighting the friendliness of locals and the proximity to the coast.

“Everyone has been so lovely to me, it’s made the transition a lot easier.”

Poss says she feels at home in the women’s line up and enjoys helping them to improve.

“I can be a little aggressive at times [on the court],” she laughs.

“But that’s all a part of being a leader and establishing a team culture.”

When off the court, Poss assists Smithton Basketball Club by training the Under 12 side and running free junior workshops.

Juniors can attend workshops at the Smithton High School gymnasium on Saturday April 6 where Poss will work with Under 10 players from 10 to 11am, Under 12 from 11am to 12.30pm and Under 14 from 1.30 to 3pm. Participants are encouraged to bring a drink bottle and clean shoes. To find out more, chat to Jess O’Halloran on 0458 232 381.
