Women execute first win

NWBU. The Tall Timbers Smithton Saints women secured their first victory of the North West Basketball Union’s Under 22 season on Friday.

The round 12 clash with the Latrobe Demons was held in Smithton where the Saints clinched the 56-41 win.

Coach Steve Poulter was ecstatic by the game’s result after a 50-point loss in the previous round’s clash.

“We had a really good training session on Wednesday (October 19) and, to the girls’ credit, their morale was still high and that flowed into Friday night’s game,” Poulter said.

“The girls executed their defensive game plan very well and were able to restrict Latrobe to a modest total.

“Our first win of the season really shows signs of improvement and a good reward for nine very resilient girls. I’m very impressed!”

In the men’s action the Saints also claimed a win over the Demons, 63-57.

Tuesday night’s round 13 program saw the Wynyard Wildcats tumble the Saints women, 30-65 while the men earned a 66-44 win in Smithton.
