Bowls. Smithton’s Division 3 side came agonisingly close to a North West Tasmanian Bowls Association trophy at the weekend, falling to Penguin by just four shots.
The only local side to have made it to the preliminary stages, Smithton earned an impressive 29-shot win (112-83) over Spreyton on Saturday to book a grand final berth against Penguin; a club they lost to in the second semi-final the weekend prior.
Against Spreyton at Wynyard, the rink led by Brent Scales sparked a charge to the final with a dominant 39-16 win, while Len Gaby’s rink also got over the top of their opponents by eight (25-17).
Rinks led by Bruce Oates and Michael Neilson both lost by a single shot, but their teammates’ efforts well and truly made up for the close deficits to see Smithton head into the following day’s decider full of confidence.
Returning to the same green to take on Penguin on Sunday, the local Div 3 side looked to make up for its previous result by taking the initiative early, up by 13 shots before the break.
However Penguin hit back hard in the second half of the match, gradually closing the margin. Up by a total of three shots with one end remaining, Penguin held on to quash an unlikely Smithton comeback, winning 90-86.
The rink of Gaby, Russell Hugo, Graeme Horne and Rodney O’Halloran were standouts on the day with a 32-13 win, while rinks led by Oates (17-30), Neilson (20-24) and Scales (17-23) fell to their opponents.
