Development. The Greenham Tasmania Circular Head Giants Under 18s will thunder into the season this Saturday (April 1).

Led by coach Jarrod Watling, the Giants are expected to make an impact against Devonport during the North West Football League’s first round.

“We’ve had a few practice matches and the boys’ efforts in that were excellent, so we just need to keep that same mentality and stay competitive,” says Watling.

“We’ve a good variety of ages, so the strength of a few 17 to 18-year-olds but then younger boys who are only 15 will balance out the side.”

While the side has lost half a dozen players who are no longer eligible for the age group, the Giants feature a taller and stronger squad this season.

Watling says the potential of the side is evident in several natural born leaders with the captaincy expected to be announced at the end of the week.

“They all seem to be willing to listen and learn which is an encouraging sign.

“Developing the boys as individual players is certainly important, but the main point is to just enjoy footy. I think if you don’t enjoy your footy you’re not going to get the most out of the game.”

In other club news, the ever popular Friday night counter meals will return from April 21.

The club’s annual ball will be held Saturday May 25, a trivia night will take place on Saturday June 24 and an auction on Friday July 28 with more details to come.

Smithton Football Club president Nic Bellinger says it’s an exciting year for the Giants.

“With the club growing and growing, year by year, it’s definitely an exciting place to be.

“This year has seen the introduction of our senior women’s team who have embraced a fantastic opportunity to compete in this year’s competition that will be run in conjunction with the NWFL roster.

In what’s been a busy off season, it will be great to be back watching the Giants represent the community once again along the coast.”

Circular Head Giants Under 16s, U/14s and U/12s will begin their North West Junior Football League season on Sunday April 23 with a home game against Latrobe. While the inaugural Circular Head Giants women’s squad will kick off on Saturday April 29.
