BCL. In a close affair between the Burnie Cricket League’s two Circular Head based sides, Perry’s Quality Meats Smithton Stars came out on top.
The round 12 encounter took place in Smithton on Saturday where the Tall Timbers Forest Stanley Demons took to the pitch for the first innings.
Sam Poke (20) and coach Jimmy Martin (8) opened the batting before some nice middle order batting from Nic Bellinger (20), Tyler Kadow (17) and Brody Davison (20) saw the side reach triple digits.
Stars youngster Lachlan Oates troubled his opponents with the ball to claim three wickets and concede 14 runs from four overs as did coach Brent Burgess with two from 18 including one maiden in eight overs.
Burgess praised young spinner Jake Roberts (1/27) for claiming the wicket of Demons’ Bellinger while Aaron Tuxworth stole three catches behind the wickets.
Following the 50 overs, the Demons managed 8/122 to set an achievable goal for their opponents.
Throughout the second innings, the Stars chased down the Demons’ total easily and sacrificed just five wickets in the process.
Opening batsman Tuxworth (4) was caught off guard with a LBW before Ben Revell (16) and Sean Ryan (45) got the side away.
Burgess (25) and David Blake (13 not out) continued the consistent streak of batting with Blake and Smith (2) guiding the side home to 5/125 in 45 overs.
The Demons’ Marty Hardy and Bellinger stalled the Stars with two wickets for 15 runs and two wickets for 27 respectively before Martin polished off the home side when he claimed the wicket of Smith, conceding just 14 runs from eight overs, including one maiden.
The two sides will each host home games this Saturday from 12pm as the Stars face Stowport while the Demons meet with Myalla.
