Solid hockey in last rostered game

CHHA. The final rostered match of the season saw upsets throughout the Division Two proceedings with Robins overruling Irishtown and Mustangs restricting Tigers.

From the first whistle, Irishtown took control of the play with fullback Bec Wells directing the flow of the game into the midfield.

Robins held a strong defensive line led by Julia Gale while Connie Perry locked the ball in the middle of the ground for much of the first half.

With fierce intent and the scoreboard untouched, both sides came out firing after the break.

Irishtown’s Sam Johns, Jaishara Poke and Div Three player Tiffany Poke began to heap pressure onto Robins’ defence and was rewarded with a series of penalty corners.

A conversion was made shortly after but disallowed when both umpires deemed it was played off the body before crossing the line, continuing a scoreless stalemate.

Robins’ Elyse Poke and Lara Porteus-Smith returned the pressure to Irishtown’s defence before a short lapse in concentration saw Brooke Smith sneak into the circle unmanned to tap the ball in and break the deadlock to see Robins take the game, 1-0.

The second Div Two game was a show of solid defence and missed opportunities as Tigers pushed for a penalty corner within the first minute but were restricted by Mustangs’ almost unbreakable defence.

Tigers continued to attack but were halted by the strong defence before a fast break from Tigers’ Kylie Monson slipped the ball through the keeper’s legs to see a 1-0 lead at half time.

Mustangs were as determined as ever in the second half but the experience of the Tigers prevailed as they secured several penalty corners before again breaking the defence through Gina Jackson to secure a 2-0 win.

In the Div Three play-offs, Tigers defeated Robins 5-0 and Mustangs outscored Irishtown 2-1.

Congratulations to Div One Best and Fairest Karlette Perry (Tigers) and runner-up Bec Wells (Irishtown), also to Div Three winner Jandi Smith (Robins) and runner-up Tiffany Poke (Irishtown).
