Smithton’s state title

Basketball. The Smithton Saints Under 12 side dominated in an undefeated performance at the State Championships last weekend.

Held in Devonport on September 2 and September 3, a record 39 teams competed in the games.

Playing at the Devonport and East Devonport recreation centres, Smithton played two games during the first day of competition, earning two victories.

Meeting Devonport in their first match, the Saints claimed a 16 to 38 point win before facing the Southern Wolves for the 26 to 45 victory.

Playing for a chance at the Grand Final, the Smithton Saints met with Kingsborough first up on Sunday to steal a convincing win and secure their place in the premiership match. 

With just one sub on the bench, Smithton were faced with a tough competitior in the Moonah Revellers.

Following a close first half, the Saints extended their lead in the second half to finish an undefeated weekend as champions.

Coached by Sarah Jaeger with manager Jarna Stubbs, the Smithton Saints were the only north west side to claim a state title.

“It was the best I have seen the girls play all year,” said Jaeger.

“They gelled really well together over the weekend [and] did a great job to get the win.”
