Business. McCain Foods announced it will close its potato processing plant in Penola, South Australia by December.
A McCain spokesperson said the closure at Penola had no immediate impact at Smithton, and production will be maintained at current levels at this stage.
“We will be reviewing production schedules to see where we can improve flexibility and at the same time, we will be focusing on productivity to boost the efficiency and competitiveness of the plant,” the spokesperson said. “Smithton and Ballarat are now the only plants in Australia processing potatoes for the Australian market, and are therefore important in the McCain network.”
The Penola plant closure will result in 59 job losses.
