Basketball. Local athletes Toby Reeve and Ryan Nibbs will represent Tasmania at Basketball Australia’s Under 16 Junior Championships set to be held in Kilsyth, Victoria in July.
After joining Basketball Tasmania’s State Development Program (SDP) two years ago – an initiative which selects budding players to advance their individual skills, mental skills and team concepts – both Ryan and Toby were approached to try out for the Tasmanian team.
Their first time experiencing state selections, both boys were “stoked” to be successful.
The opportunity “to play basketball against Australia’s top athletes” motivated Toby to strive for the position and Ryan also welcomed the upcoming challenge.
With the national competition set to run from July 2-9 at Kilsyth Sports Centre, the young players have a jam-packed training schedule established in preparation.
Training seven days a week, between Wednesday afternoon SDP sessions in Ulverstone, state training in Launceston each Saturday and alternating morning and evening sessions with local basketballer Danyon Saville in Smithton, the schedule has certainly kept the junior talent on their toes.
“[Training] has really helped us better prepare for the tournament,” Toby said. “It’s further motivation to get through the senior (North West Basketball Union) season.”
Working closely with Saville has better prepared their individual skills too, according to Ryan.
Tasmania will face Western Australia Metro in their first of five trials throughout the week.
