Season wraps up

Tennis.The Smithton Tennis Club is nearing the end of the season with the post-Christmas roster having their finals recently.

The A Grade Mixed final was played between the Red team of Jason “Rubber” Williams, Tim Arnold, Ben Forsyth and Janette Grey, and the Blue team of Sam Cleland, Greg Horton, Laura Korpershoek and Fiona Van Norden. While Blue put in a strong defence, Red won 12-2.

In the B Grade Men’s, the final was played out between the Actionmen (Sam Porteus-Smith, Scott Korpershoek, Luke Korpershoek and Brady Neasey) and the Spidermen (Jared Evenhuis, Tim House, Nigel Sommervile and Laura Korpershoek as a fill-in), with the Spidermen coming out on top, 12-3.

The B Grade Women’s final was between Let’s Swing (Karma Bellinger, Lily Vardon and Tei Popowski) and Sideline Shot (Cynthia Arnold, Shirleah Lardner and Felicity Arnold). Let’s Swing continued on their previous form and had a convincing 8-0 win.

In the Social roster, the Cheetahs (Sam Holmes, Eddie Popowski, Carrie Dunham and Tei Popowski) played the Leopards (Brady Neasey, Fletcher Nicholls, Nakore Popowski, and Louise Drake). The Cheetahs lost two games but came out ahead, 10-4.

The children’s Hot Shots program also finished for the year on Sunday. Local tennis great Sally Collins did another fantastic job introducing 16 kids to basic tennis skills.

The last event for the year will be the end-of-season dinner and prize giving on Saturday April 2.
