Season debut

NWJFL. Despite the withdrawal of an Under 16s squad, the Circular Head Giants have kicked off a new season of the North West Junior Football League.

Starting the season last Friday (April 21) under lights at the Smithton Recreation Ground, the U/12s claimed an uncontested 4.9.33 victory against Latrobe.

The young and enthusiastic squad was focused on the task at hand as it ran onto ground before a clever snap deep in the pocket by Solomon Tuxworth opened the team’s account for the year.

The Giants gelled and played excellent team football, supporting each other at the contest and applying pressure to the opposition.

In the second half, first-gamer Dylan Grey presented well up forward to secure a goal and gain several more opportunities while James Tuaoi also bagged two majors.

Following a successful season debut, Circular Head was keen to impress once again as they met with Wynyard on Sunday.

Wynyard pounced on the Giants early for a 19 point lead at the main break. Returning to the ground with more vigour and willingness to apply pressure on their opposition, the Giants’ first goal arrived in the final term following a strong mark and set shot by Bronsen Sutton-Collins. This was followed by a goal from Liam Corrigan soon after.

However the final score saw Wynyard take the win with a 6.14.50 to 2.1.13 margin.

In the U/14s action, Circular Head narrowly missed out on a round one victory to Latrobe 4.11.35 to 5.8.38 before a 28.20.188 to 2.0.12 defeat by Wynyard in round two.

The Circular Head Giants will travel again this weekend to meet with Ulverstone on Sunday (May 7) from 10am.
