Saints seize round 14 win

GNL women. West Devonport held the home field advantage in hosting the Rocky Cape Tavern Saints for a round 14 showdown on Saturday.

Despite the disadvantage, the valiant Saints’ determination saw them seize an unexpected win.

Eager to make an impact on the scoreboard early, the Saints put West on the back foot with a slick goal from Manica Hills.

However, West responded with a goal of their own to level the scores, 1-1.

Continuing to pressure the Saints’ defence, West pressed in on Smithton’s back line, but the hard work of best-on-ground performer Mel Gray – ably supported by Keeley Hinds in goals – repelled the constant onslaught.

Co-coach Leah House’s vision and transfers were right on target while Laura Korpershoek’s strategic overlapping provided the Saints with a solid drive into attack.

Hassling West’s defence, co-coach Bek Lardner, club veteran Sonia Poke and young guns Kira Johnston and Alex Mainwaring worked hard on the forward line to find opportunities.

Johnston sealed the game for Smithton, capitalising from an opportunity set up by Darcey Smith and Donna Hills to see the Saints home as 2-1 victors.

Sonia Poke will play her 400th club game in Launceston this Saturday when the Saints encounter ladder leaders South Launceston.
