GNL. The Tall Timbers Smithton Saints women claimed the Vicky Bennett Memorial Cup during Greater Northern League proceedings against Devonport in Smithton on Saturday.
In a tightly contested match, Smithton set out to win back the title from Devonport.
The Saints demonstrated a united side, strong in defence and offence led by Abbey House and Lilly Nibbs in attack and Leah House, Melissa Stokes and Jandi Smith across the backline.
Following a first half of failed offensive attempts by both teams, Smithton’s Zoe Groves broke through the Devonport defenders to score for the home side.
Smithton carried this momentum throughout the remainder of the match, holding out the opposition for the victory, 1 to 0.
In the men’s match, Smithton fought a hard battle against Tamar Churinga.
Feisty form and strong play from both sides made for a thrilling match, led by stealthy Saints Daniel Cramer, Logan Buckby and Harry Lester.
The Smithton men gained a one goal advantage over the visiting Tamar team, holding on for the 2 to 3 victory.
In the final Greater Northern League round of the season, the Smithton Saints will travel to McKenna Park where the men will take on Burnie Baptist and the women will meet with South Burnie.
