Rugby rumbles into town

Recreation. As the weather cools off, winter sport is heating up and a new game is coming to town.

Circular Head will host a round-robin tournament of rugby union at the Forest Recreation Ground next Saturday (April 2), showcasing the game to the region.

The Burnie Rugby Union Club, Devonport Rugby Club and the Launceston Rugby Union Football Club will each face-off against a Circular Head side in what’s set to be a good-spirited afternoon.

Burnie Rugby Union Club president Warren Taylor said the sporting spectacle would provide an entertaining afternoon for spectators and players alike, with hopes a local side may enter into the Tasmanian Rugby Union roster.

“Last year we played a Smithton verse Burnie match,” Taylor said.

“It was a good afternoon, [Circular Head] had a good team – they beat us!”

Following the success of last year’s match, the Bulls will return to re-match a representative Circular Head side.

The afternoon will kick off at 2pm, playing 15 minute games (seven-minute halves) in a knock-out format with the ladder’s leaders to play in a Grand Final thriller.

However to make all of this possible, Taylor is calling on local residents to come forth and represent their region.

“It’s just about having fun . . . and hopefully gaining interest in Smithton,” he said.

Forest Sports Centre will open the bar and a barbecue will be available.

“The more the merrier!” Taylor added.

“It should be a pretty good day, come along and see a different sport you don’t see every day.”
