Rivers funding welcome

Consultation with locals has led to funding for local river management. Pictured is Minister for Primary Industries and Water Jeremy Rockliff with Shane Hine, of the Welcome River Riverworks District, and James Finlayson of the Montagu Catchment River Improvement District.

Catchments. The state government is providing $350,000 to local landowners for practical management of the Welcome and Montagu rivers.

Following consultation with the community, including representatives from the Welcome River Riverworks District and the Montagu Catchment River Improvement District, the funding will provide for environmental studies and for cost sharing with landowners on practical on-ground flood mitigation and river management works.

These catchments have a low gradient and the impacts of floods on productive agricultural land and river stability has been an ongoing issue.

Together with the Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment and Tasmanian Irrigation, the government is responding to these concerns with this funding.

Tasmanian Irrigation is the responsible water entity for management of the two districts.

Minister for Primary Industries and Water Jeremy Rockliff thanked all farmers and landholders for engaging in constructive dialogue over the past year “resulting in a positive way forward”.
