NWFL. The Greenham Tasmania Circular Head Giants Reserves have advanced into the North West Football League’s Semi Final following a 13-point victory against Wynyard on Sunday.
Finishing the season in fifth place, the Giants met the Cats in Wynyard for the Elimination Final showdown.
Entering the contest as underdogs, Circular Head turned the tide on Wynyard who finished slightly ahead of the Giants in fourth place.
The two sides last collided during the Saturday July 2 round 14 contest where Wynyard claimed a comfortable 47-point victory.
In a tense finals atmosphere, Sunday’s clash began heatedly with both teams throwing themselves at the contest.
A physical first term saw Wynyard take a slender six-point lead.
Following the first break, an agile start allowed the Giants to kick three second-quarter goals and lead with an 11-point buffer at half time.
Words of wisdom from coach Nathan Drake inspired Circular Head to boot four goals to Wynyard’s two and lead by 17 points at the final change.
Wynyard booted two last quarter goals to get back in the game before the Giants kicked their only goal of the quarter to hang on to the 8.6.54 to 9.13.67 victory.
Coach Drake attributed the win to a superb team effort and further praised Will Smith, Michael Booth and Cameron Lockett for their solid four-quarter efforts.
“It took us a little bit to gel but once we did that we were able to move the footy well and hit our targets,” Drake said of the final result.
Circular Head will progress to the North West Football League’s first Semi Final this Sunday when they will travel to Ulverstone to play at 12pm.
The Giants will have a fierce competition on their hands as Ulverstone look to bounce back from a 55-point Qualifying Final loss to Latrobe.
Circular Head and Ulverstone last met in round 16 where the latter stole a one-point victory from the Giants.
