Exchange. Macayla Anderson is embarking on an adventure to South America.
The Marist Regional College student is spending a year abroad immersing herself in Brazilian history and culture with the Rotary Youth Exchange program.
Leaving for Brazil last Friday, Macayla is travelling to the Rotary Club de Araras in the Province of Sau Paulo.
The 16-year-old says she has dreamed of an experience such as this for years after hearing from a friend’s older sister about the program.
Since then, Macayla spent countless hours researching destinations before settling on Brazil, after joining and connecting with others in an online community for exchange students.
The Smithton local is looking to learn more about the world around her during her time abroad.
“The culture is completely different from Australia’s which will allow me to explore and challenge myself,” she says.
She is also excited to learn the country’s official language, Portuguese.
Rotary Club of Smithton president elect Leighton Stewart said: “This is a huge opportunity for Macayla and we are sure she will do herself, her family and our Rotary club proud.”
