Basketball. St Peter Chanel Catholic School’s grade 3/4 girls were victorious at the ‘North West Primary School Regional Tournament’ at the weekend.

The young basketballers claimed the Division Two title following four undefeated performances throughout the tournament.

Meeting with their Stella Maris Catholic Primary School peers in Somerset on Saturday, the local squad won the game by 28 points before an encounter with Port Sorell Primary School saw them earn a 16-point victory.

In a Semi Final showdown on Sunday, the Smithton side met again with Stella Maris in Penguin before claiming the 20-point victory.

Achieving a premiership place, the girls travelled to Burnie that afternoon to meet the fast-paced St Brigid’s Catholic School girls.

A low scoring match ensued with both teams’ defence preventing scoring opportunities.

St Peter Chanel held a slim lead at quarter time and by half time had extended this lead further. But there was still work to do.

The second half saw a hard fought game however St Peter Chanel were handed a handful of fouls.

Strong attacking toward the basket saw the Smithton side maintain their lead and claim the Grand Final with an 18-point victory.

The grade 3/4 girls weren’t the only St Peter Chanel side to make an impact on the court, with the grade 3/4 boys earning third place in Div Two, the grade 5/6 girls placing fourth in Div One and the grade 5/6 boys finishing third in Div Two.
