Vehicles. Nelson Street will soon be home to a new parking lot, between Smithton Christian Fellowship and St Vincent De Paul Society.
Twenty-one parking spaces, including one disability car park, are expected to be ready for use by the end of July, weather permitting.
Work began at the site last month.
Circular Head general manager Greg Winton said the car park was needed to help alleviate street parking issues. He said local businesses had raised concerns about limited street parking on Nelson Street, which between Smith and Gibson Streets provides about 50 spaces.
Mr Winton said the council had made enquiries with McCain Foods to purchase the land on Nelson Street in 2011.
The work was approved in the 2012-2013 Annual Plan and Budget Estimates.
“This will be a good outcome for the CBD and will provide additional parking for the town centre,” Mr Winton said. “The new car park will help address issues with the need for short term car parking on the street, while creating space for longer term parking.”
