Bowls. Smithton Bowls Club is yielding varied results in the opening weeks of the Men’s and Ladies’ 2014/15 pennant competitions.
After kicking off on October 4, the Men’s four Saturday fixtures have seen Smithton’s Division 3 side leading the pack with three wins and one loss; club secretary Sonny Quilliam describing the run as “one of their best starts in many a year”.
Following wins over Turners Beach, South Burnie and Spreyton, Smithton sits eight points clear of three sides on the ladder, with the weekend’s loss to Burnie their first of the season.
The Division 5 team is “probably on the other end of the spectrum”, sitting eighth out of eleven with one win, two losses and a draw to date.
The thrilling draw came in the weekend’s match against Turners Beach, with the two teams unable to be separated at a final score of 71-71.
Only two matches have been played in the Ladies’ pennant so far, with Smithton entering Division 1 and 3 sides in the Thursday fixtures.
The Division 1 side sits on third with a win and a loss – their position aided by a greater percentage – while Division 3 currently sits in last position with two early losses.
Club secretary Patsy Medwin said it was difficult to “give any indication” as to how the Ladies’ sides were travelling so early in the competition, adding a strong start was crucial as the greens become faster later in the season.
