May day record

Rain. Smithton and Marrawah have recorded their wettest day in May.

Heavy rain fell in much of the state’s north west, north and upper east coast on the weekend.

In the 24 hours from 9am Friday to Saturday, the heaviest falls were in the north, including 62 millimetres at Smithton, 50mm at Marrawah and 38mm at Gape Grim.

For comparison, 74mm fell at at Flinders Island, 27mm at Wynyard and 24mm at Devonport.

The above totals were the wettest May day for Flinders Island since 1969, and for Smithton and Marrawah the wettest May day on record, with 22 years and 47 years of records respectively.

In the 24 hours to 9am Sunday, the heaviest falls were in the north and upper east.

No stations reported breaking their annual records on either Saturday or Sunday.
