Local league returns

Irishtown’s Ivan Garton attempts to fend off Redpa’s Danny Ollington in last year’s Circular Head Football Association Seniors grand final.

CHFA. Four clubs will be looking to officially put their pre-season preparation to the test in the league’s opening tournament this Saturday.

Kicking off slightly earlier than last year, the Circular Head Football Association’s Lightning Premiership will take place at Stanley Recreation Ground from 10.30am, with six matches to be contested throughout the day.

With the Trowutta-City Bulldogs withdrawing from the competition this year, two games will be played in the Seniors and U/17s based on last year’s ladder positions at the end of the season, with the winners of each going on to play a finals match.

Reigning senior premiers of the last three years, Redpa, will take on fierce rivals Irishtown in a 2014 grand final rematch, while hosts Forest-Stanley will face off against Scotchtown in the game prior.

The Demons’ U/17 side will open the day’s play with a match against the Canaries, while the Tigers – last year’s U/17 premiers – take on the Redlegs in the match following.

Many clubs have benefited from a busy transfer period in the off-season, with a number of players returning from other leagues to where they began their junior football.

After tearing an ACL in last year’s representative game, Redpa’s Zach Bransden will take on the senior coaching role off the field this year, bringing in the likes of Saints’ Chris Smith but losing 2014 CHFA Best and Fairest Runner-up Michael Booth.

Booth will take on an assistant coach role at the Canaries, with the senior team led by Michael Febey and welcoming in another key player in Bon Radford from Smithton.

Brent Burgess will again lead the senior team for Scotchtown, while assistant coach Zac Grey will be forced to spend much of the season on the bench having suffered a leg injury.

Forest-Stanley have recruited a number of former players including senior coach Matt Elliott and brother Ben alongside brothers Guy and Mark Kearnes, while key Saints midfielder Scott “Dogs” Bryan has also signed on.
