Intense end to Smithton season

NWH. The Smithton Saints have finished their North West Hockey season in the Preliminary Final following a penalty shoot out loss to Burnie Baptist.

In a show of outstanding teamwork, Smithton delivered the ball into offence through accurate passing for Kiah House to convert the first score with a slick tomahawk. Soon after, Burnie Baptist retaliated with a penalty corner conversion.

Throughout the game, Max Lester set up plenty of offensive play for the Saints with overlapping sprints down the right side of the field supported by Elyse Poke and Deakhan Poke however Smithton were unable to score again before half time.

As the game continued, Baptist converted a second penalty corner before the Saints replied with a goal from Abbey House.

Smithton goalkeeper Tomas Coker displayed his talents whilst making some spectacular saves throughout the match and Lily Nibbs played a best on ground performance.

As the game concluded the score remained a draw and Smithton sent nine Saints into seven-and-a-half minutes of golden goal play. When the score remained stuck, a further two players from each side were removed and a second half of golden goal played.

The Saints elected five players to take on the Baptist goalkeeper in one-on-one eight-second rundowns where Kiah, Abbey and Darcey Smith each slipped past the keeper. However Baptist held the pace to secure three goals of their own.

As the game was sent to penalty strokes, Kiah claimed one however Burnie prevailed with two to win the game and end Smithton’s season.
