Players. Smithton Basketball Club has welcomed recruits Marc Matthews and Diamond Richardson.

The American imports will join the Smithton Saints senior squads from round one of the North West Basketball Union season, launching tomorrow night.

Previously playing with Montana State University in Bozeman, Marc says he is keen to discover the intensity of the game in another country. The 24-year-old will also coach the club’s Under 16 side throughout his time in Australia.

“We have a young side, we have talent,” he says of the senior men.

“I’m hoping I can bring my experience of playing college basketball to the side, get the guys playing together more.”

Averaging 15 points, four rebounds and four assists last season, Marc will look to increase that this season and raise the average of individual players through his mentorship.

Diamond, who recently played with the squad at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, says her main goal is supporting the growth of the club in coaching the Under 12 side as well as through her role with the senior women.

Arriving in the state last week, Diamond says she is keen to see the team hit the court with a round one home game.

“I think we’ll be okay if we learn to work together as a team, learn each other’s game and we’ll produce.”

In her last season, Diamond averaged 29 points, nine rebounds and four assists and hopes the statistics complement the Saints this season.
