CHHA. Robins defeated Tigers in another tense classic, with a come-from-behind 3-2 win enough to send them straight through to the grand final.

Meanwhile in the first semi final, Mustangs came close to causing the upset of the season, eventually going down to Irishtown in a penalty shootout with the latter to play Tigers in the resulting preliminary final.

In the second semi final, the rivalry between the top two sides of the competition was renewed, with the record between Robins and Tigers even at two wins each in their last four encounters.

Tigers didn’t waste any time in making their finals run, scoring two early goals through veteran captain Irene “Squirt” Grey.

Robins eventually worked themselves back into the game, levelling the scores just before the break through goals to Paige Ferguson and Madeline House.

After half time, both sides stepped up their game to add a fierce intensity to the match, with Robins’ Anna Jaeger scoring the decisive winner after a penalty corner.

Beautiful weather greeted Irishtown and Mustangs in the first semi, with the latter catching the Canaries off guard early in the match, taking an unlikely lead through Tenille Scott after some good team play.

The game then proceeded to break down in to an end-to-end battle, with neither side able to take control. But with their season on the line, Irishtown began to take control in the second half and eventually scored the equaliser with 10 minutes remaining.

The tempo went up immediately, with both sides coming close to scoring the winning goal; time the telling factor as the game headed into golden goal extra time.

With neither side managing to score during extra time, the game came down to a penalty shootout, with the green and gold holding their nerve to end Mustangs’ season in 2014.

This weekend’s preliminary final between Tigers and Irishtown will take place at 10am this Saturday, while the Div 3 prelim will between Robins and Irishtown Yellow at 12pm.
