Hellyer Rally action

Huonville driver David Oates and navigator Darren Lovell prepare to start round two of the Tasmanian Rally Championship, the Tall Timbers Hellyer Rally, in Smithton on Saturday in their Datsun 1600. Oates and Lovell were unable to finish proceedings when the engine of the vehicle exploded into flames, scattering debris in all directions.

Motorsport. The Tall Timbers Hellyer Rally hosted round two of the Tasmanian Rally Championship at Togari on Saturday.

Following a round one victory at Mathinna last month, driver Eddie Maguire and navigator Michael Potter earned a one minute and six second victory in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 9 over Jamie Vandenberg and Adrian Hodgetts in a Mitsubishi Lancer Evo 5. Meanwhile Tim Auty and Josh Sutcliffe finished third in a 26-year-old Mazda 323 GTR.

Maguire held just a 0.2 second lead at the first stage before extending this to 23 seconds at the halfway mark.

The event saw round two of the Buckby Motors Subaru Impreza RS Challenge in which Smithton driver Sara Rogers alongside navigator Jon Mitchell raced.

Sam Hill and Rebecca Sheldrick took out the challenge just 7.6 seconds ahead of round one winners Tim Grave and Craig Sheahan with Jake Crawford and Ross Adam following in third.

The action saw plenty of thrills and spills throughout with Rogers and Mitchell finishing the challenge prematurely following a rollover on the eighth and final stage.
