Event. Smithton Country Club will be a hive of activity this weekend as the March long weekend marks one of the club’s biggest calendar events.
The ‘Neil Wells Memorial Four-Ball-Best-Ball’ will tee off this Saturday (March 12) followed by the ‘SW and AJ Barker Smithton Bowl’ on Sunday and Monday.
Following last year’s 96 entrants, the long weekend’s events are again expected to draw a large crowd, with golfers travelling from as far as Western Australia and King Island to compete.
Smithton Golf Club men’s president Matthew Sheehan said despite a dry summer the course was well prepared for the forthcoming competition.
“The course is in good nick,” he said.
“It was very dry a month ago and we were a bit concerned but the last two weeks it has greened up well – it’s in good condition.”
With more than $5000 worth of prizes up for grabs, he expects the competition to be close with plenty of “good A-Grade golfers” taking to the green and encouraged spectators to follow suit.
“Some days we get 50 people standing at the back of the green watching the shots,” he said.
“It makes for a good, fun weekend.”
The women will continue the tournament the following weekend with the 27-hole ‘Marie Lord Memorial Smithton Bowl’ on Saturday March 19 and the ‘Bev O’Halloran Memorial Mixed Canadian Foursome’ on Sunday.
