CHFA. Lightning will strike at twilight this Saturday (April 9) as the first bounce marks the start of a new season.
The Circular Head Football Association’s annual season opening tournament – the ‘Lightning Premiership’ – will this year take place under lights at the Smithton Recreation Ground.
All four clubs – Irishtown, Redpa, Scotchtown and Forest Stanley – will enter their Senior and U/16s sides into the calendar event.
Following a review of the junior league and in response to changes to the NWFL’s previous U/19s competition, which dropped back to U/18s, the CHFA has this year changed the underage competition from U/17s to U/16s.
CHFA president Stuart Gale said he believed this would benefit the local clubs in fostering players’ talents from a younger age.
With gates opening at 3pm and bar and canteen facilities available, all proceeds from the evening will go towards insurance costs.
“They’re not playing for points this year,” Gale said. “[The] season opener is an opportunity for all clubs to see who they’ve got [and] the main reason is to raise money for public liability insurance to help out all clubs.”
The U/16s will kick off from 4pm followed by the Seniors at 5.30pm.
