Finals close to reality

Bowls. Another win to Smithton’s Division 3 side sees them continue to streak ahead at the top of the table with two games remaining in the season.

The local side currently sits on 267 points and eight points clear of nearest rivals Penguin, following a tight 99-84 win over Ulverstone away from home.

Rinks led by Bruce Oates (27-23), Len Gaby (26-21) and Brent Scales (29-20) all recorded marginal wins, while Michael Neilson’s group suffered a narrow three-shot defeat.

Div 3 will now host Penguin this weekend before travelling to Wynyard for the final roster game of 2014/15.

In Division 5, Smithton played Railton to hold on in a nail-biting finish, winning by just two shots (82-80) to take 12 points from the game.

While the rinks of Max Holden (22-32) and Rodney O’Halloran (26-27) went down, Robbie Innes led a game-winning rink (34-21) to hold off the opposition.

Div 5 will prepare for trips away to play Wynyard and South Burnie Green in the coming weeks, with a finals berth still mathematically possible.

Three rounds remain in the Thursday Pennant, with Smithton’s Division 1 side earning a 21-shot win over Spreyton and the Division 3 team falling to Burnie by 20 shots last week.
