Culture. A street festival will mark the beginning of Art About Town next month.

On Friday September 1, from 5pm, the main street of Smithton will be closed to traffic as the road is transformed into a festival space full of colour, music and movement.

Buskers, street performers, light installations and craft tables will adorn the streets while youth artworks will be on display in business windows.

Visitors can listen to live music at Time Out on Emmett while viewing the CHArtchibald entries, enjoying a beverage and sampling food compliments of Hugo’s Catering.

Next door in the currently unused shop, a pop-up gallery will showcase art, photography and writing works by local residents.

Other exhibits include a photobooth with a difference where guests can become part of famous paintings, a virtual reality painting experience and light installations.

Festivities will pause at 7.30pm while competition winners are announced in Time Out before the night draws to a close around 9pm.

Towards the end of the month, on Sunday September 24, the That’s Classic! concert will return after a successful inaugural event last year with performances from classical musicians.

Be sure to pop these dates in your diary and join in these community festivities.
