Environment Minister’s mine visit

Mining. Environment Minister Mark Butler visited north west Tasmania today, to gather information on the Shree Minerals’ Nelson Bay River Mine and reassess the proposal that was last week deemed invalid in the Federal Court.

To coincide with his visit, environmental group Save the Tarkine held a funeral service for the Tasmanian Devil. The mock service was used to illustrate advice given to Mr Butler that the mine will likely introduce Devil Facial Tumour Disease into the area.

During his visit, Mr Butler is expected to hear from both sides of the debate. It is expected that Mr Butler will make a decision by early next week.
