NWFL. The Greenham Tasmania Circular Head Giants were defeated by the Burnie Dockers in round nine of the North West Football League on Saturday.
With one loss and eight wins to the Dockers’ name, the visitors were struck by Burnie’s intensity in the first half of the game as the home notched 10 goals and 16 points before the main break.
The Giants were unable to hit the middle posts in the third however prevented the Dockers from inflicting damage as the defence, led by Ryan Grey, locked in.
Aaron Tuxworth supported goal kickers Nathan Bransden, Harry Jaeger, Mason Chatwin, Joel Poke, Jaiden Crole and Matt Elliott in the forwardline as the side doubled the score in the fourth quarter.
Despite the final quarter contributions, Circular Head were defeated 19.25.139 to 8.10.58.
Notching six majors and conceding one behind in the opening term, the Reserves played with consistency throughout the 7.4.46 to 17.14.116 victory.
The home side kicked into gear in the second quarter, claiming four majors and two behinds while the visitors added three goals and five points to the tally before the main break.
Matt Emmett contributed four majors throughout the contest alongside three goals each from Joe Brown and Bhodi Johnston, earning best player performances from Emmett and Brown.
The Dockers’ momentum vanished in the third quarter as the Giants notched eight majors in the second half to secure the victory by 70 points.
Bailey Grey, Austen Perry, Isaac Perry and Kaleb O’Halloran notched the Giants’ goals in the Under 18 match.
Circular Head remained competitive throughout the affair, as the scoreboard drew at 3.8.26 to 4.2.26 at half time before Burnie escaped in the fourth quarter, defeating the visitors 10.14.74 to 4.6.30.
In the North West Junior Football League on Sunday, Brandon Woolley and Eli Arnold notched two and one goals respectively in the Under 14 match, ably supported by Ky Lee, Jesse Lee, Tyler Young, Michael Arnold, Kalon Nicholls and Hunter Stokes. Despite the strength of the Giants, the side was defeated 21.11.137 to 3.4.22.
Both Burnie and Circular Head were slow to kick into the Under 12 game before Michael Innes-Smith notched one for the visitors in the third term to finish the game 6.4.40 to 1.5.11.
Meanwhile, the Junior Girls are yet to earn a victory after the 15.14.104 to 1.0.6 defeat.
The Circular Head Giants will return to the North West Football League on Saturday June 16 to take on Penguin at Dial Sports Complex.
