NWH. The Smithton Saints were unlucky to register a defeat against Devonport in the North West Hockey Semi Final at Meercroft Park on Friday.
Finishing the season at second on the ladder, the young Saints met the league’s leaders in a fight to claim a home Grand Final.
Met by tough umpiring and strong opponents, Smithton played to their highest standard impressing spectators with their hard running and finesse.
The Saints held a one goal advantage in their possession until a controversial penalty corner was awarded to Devonport in the dying seconds of the game, tying scores and sending the match into golden goal drop off.
Playing with seven players each, Devonport secured the winning goal in the second period of overtime to defeat Smithton 2-1 in the hard fought match.
The Smithton Saints will meet with Burnie Baptist tomorrow (Friday August 25) in the North West Hockey Preliminary Final in Smithton from 8pm in their bid to join Devonport in the Grand Final.
