Development squad

Hockey. Smithton Hockey Club has established a junior development program to foster the talent of the region’s young players.

The development series welcomed more than 30 players to the first training of the ‘Smithton Hockey Development Squad’ last Thursday (October 20).

Led by Smithton Hockey Club stalwarts, the squad is open to players aged between 10 and 16 who are looking to advance their skill level and knowledge of the game.

Coordinator Nigel Kingston said the program is open to players with basic skills and will help encourage these budding players throughout the series.

“The first week we did a bit of dribbling and tackling,” he said.

“We’ll continue to build these basic skills before looking into more advanced things like channelling and running patterns.”

Weekly training sessions are held Thursdays from 6-7pm at the Smithton Hockey Complex.
