BCL. Three rounds out from the Burnie Cricket League finals, Forest Stanley remain in the top four while Smithton sit at the other end of the table.
The Tall Timbers Forest Stanley Demons earned a victory against West Ridgley on Saturday while the Perry’s Quality Meats Smithton Stars were pipped at the post by Acton.
Playing in Ridgley, Forest Stanley held the bat throughout the first innings with Jimmy Martin (6) and Nic Bellinger (10) opening proceedings.
Demon Damon Smith followed at third in the line up with an impressive performance of 76 runs including 10 fours and a six.
Lachlan Bissett (7) and Marty Hardy (37) followed in the middle order before Tyler Kadow (24 not out), Shaun Turale (9) and Matthew Smith (4 not out) rounded out the 40 overs to reach 7/189.
As the second innings ensued, West Ridgley managed 175 from 38 overs, including just seven extras.
Martin and Bissett were on the ball each claiming three wickets in eight overs from 30 and 32 runs respectively. Mitchell Bellinger (2/23) and Kadow (1/27) also bowled well throughout their seven and two overs.
In Smithton, the Stars started the game positively as Aaron Tuxworth (60) led the line up followed by two eight run performances from Logan Smith and Sean Ryan.
Jacob Finch (18), Ben Revell (10), Connor Smith (12) and Sam Muller (13) batted consistently throughout the middle order but the momentum was lost as the innings came to a close.
The Stars finished 49 overs with a total of 168 runs including 26 extras – a competitive target for Acton to reach.
Visiting batsman Kye Apted (58) gave the side a good start before he was stumped by Tuxworth and bowled by Finch.
The leading batsman’s score was followed by a succession of single digits until Nick Bartlett (21), Scott Bakes (28) and Matthew Fraser (20) stepped up to the pitch.
Smithton Star Connor Smith stood out amongst the Smithton batting line up with three wickets from 10 overs, conceding 16 runs. Finch claimed two wickets from six overs and 23 runs, and Ryan took one from his nine overs, letting 46 runs escape while Lachlan Oates and Muller stole one catch each.
Round 10 of the Burnie Cricket League will be played this Saturday (February 10) when the Forest Stanley Demons and Smithton Stars meet at Stanley.
