Information. Ever wondered what it would be like to be a councillor?
Those thinking of standing at the upcoming Local Government Elections are invited to a forum to ask current councillors what the role entails.
On Thursday August 14, councillors will open up the discussion in question-and-answer style format at the Council Chambers.
While most people are aware that councillors attend monthly meetings to talk through motions affecting the community, there is much more that goes on behind the scenes according to Councillor Jan Bishop, who suggested the forum at last Thursday’s council meeting.
“I think theres a lot involved in being councillor,” she said, adding the forum would give prospective councillors the opportunity to be “fully informed so that they know what the expectations and commitments are”.
Cr Bishop said throughout the year she attends “well over 100 meetings” and admitted the role is demanding.
However, she said it is equally rewarding.
Cr Bishop, who will again put herself in the running, said she enjoys “all aspects” of her role.
“I enjoy being involved in the community. I enjoy the contact,” she said. “It gives you a lot of personal growth.”
Once candidates have been announced a ‘Meet the Candidates’ forum will also be held before the elections in October.
