Cricket. A hard-fought win on Sunday sees Circular Head Cowbiz Colts remain undefeated in the Cricket North West U/17s competition.
Playing Devonport Orions at Devonport Oval, CH coach Glen McLaren knew after inspecting the pitch that it was going to be a tough, low-scoring affair.
Devonport batted first and tight bowling from Ben Spinks (five overs for just three runs) and Connor Smith 2/8 saw Devonport 2/13 off 10 overs.
With the pitch having variable bounce, captain Liam McLaren turned to spin with himself 2/19 off 9 overs and Jake Roberts 3/28 off 9 overs keeping the Devonport batsmen on their toes.
Shaun Blake 1/11, Kailen Oates 1/10 and Smith claimed the last wicket to have Devonport all out for 102 off 43.2overs.
CH Cowbiz Colts started the chase badly losing Isaac Perry by being run out without facing a ball.
Oates was promoted to number-three position and he, along with Lewis Nicholls (33), dug in and put together a 56-run partnership in 20 overs.
Oates fell to leg-spin bowler Ben Tenaglia for 14 and the game tightened up, with Tenaglia striking three more times to have CH 5/77.
Ryan Nibbs (6), Lochie Hunt (7no) and Connor Smith (7no) saw CH get across the line with some smart running between wickets. CH finished 7/104 from 36.4 overs.
Coach McLaren said that he was proud of all the boys as it was a hard batting pitch.
“Oates and Nicholls were superb and everyone worked really hard,” he said. “That was our best win of the season.”
Next week, CH Cowbiz Colts play at home against the also undefeated Latrobe in what will decide the top spot on the ladder.
