Canaries look for premiership trifecta

CHFA. The Irishtown Canaries will field three sides in the Circular Head Football Association Grand Final this Saturday.

Following Forest Stanley victories in both the Seniors and Reserves during the Preliminary Final in Stanley on Saturday, the Demons will meet with the Canaries and vie for premiership glory while Irishtown will challenge an undefeated Redpa after defeating Scotchtown.

With the season at stake, Forest Stanley Demon Brandon Tonks led his side throughout the four quarters registering three majors for the game as the side recorded three goals and four behinds in the opening term. While the Scotchtown Tigers responded with just one goal and one point.

Finding momentum in the second term, Scotchtown closed the gap to one point at half time to then lead by two points at the final change. In what was a tight contest, Tigers can attribute this surge in offence to the slick kicking of Brent Burgess with three majors throughout the contest.

Strict defence at both ends prevented the scoreboard from advancing above 50 points as a tight game favoured Forest Stanley in the end, 6.11.47 to 6.7.43.

In the Reserves, strong defence kept scoring to a minimum as Forest Stanley opened the first quarter with one goal and three points while Scotchtown responded with just two behinds.

The Tigers put their first goal on the board in the second term as the Demons converted a second major.

The game was decided in the premiership quarter as the Demons booted four majors while restricting their opponents’ offensive opportunities entirely however the Tigers refused to quit, putting two goals and two points on the board in a final fourth quarter attempt. The 6.4.40 Forest Stanley haul held up against Scotchtown’s 3.9.27 for the victory.

In the Under 16 game, Scotchtown were unable to make an impact in the goal square during the first quarter as Irishtown booted two goals and five points.

The Tigers opened their account with just two behinds before half time while the Canaries claimed a third major.

Scotchtown remained in contention throughout the third claiming three goals and restricting Irishtown to one until the Canaries took the game home in the fourth with a 8.11.59 to 3.3.21 victory.
