Bowls. Resurfaced green a step closer

The Smithton Saints found the going tough against quality opposition in Latrobe during Bowls North West’s Mixed Division One competition last Thursday.

Karen Neilson’s rink gained one point for a draw while Cherylle Pedley’s rink earned two valuable points for the Division Three team.

The addition of Ross Arnold and Michael Berechree in the Mixed Division Four competition gained the team a win last Saturday as well as 10 points to move further up the ladder, and while the ladder remains tight, each point is important.

Meanwhile, the Mixed Division Two team went down on all rinks in a close encounter with South Burnie. All rinks fought valiantly to be defeated by less than five points, allowing the side to remain in second place on the ladder.

The Smithton Country Club is in the final stages of resurfacing the green, according to Smithton Bowls Club president Rodney O’Halloran.

“They say many hands make light work – well we tested the theory on Friday with the excavation and laying of synthetic turf in front of the clubrooms,” he says.

“After a few hiccups, we managed to bring together the preparation and laying of the [turf].

“Hopefully, the weather won’t be as severe as predicted this week and the playing surface can begin.”
