In Bowls North West games, last Thursday’s ladies pennant was a washout across the competition.
Saturday’s mixed pennant found the slow greens tough going with the Smithton Saints’ Division Two and Division Four teams not faring well. Div Two left with one rink and Div Four with a draw in one rink.
“We have done really well in both divisions considering our circumstances,” says Smithton Bowls Club president Rodney O’Halloran.
The teams have been unable to train throughout most of the season due to the Smithton Country Club green undergoing resurfacing works.
“One thing we must remember, there are greener pastures on the other side of Christmas, literally, when we can actually practise.”
This week Div Two play an away game against Penguin for the start of the second round.
“It’s a game we need to be prepared for mentally,” says O’Halloran, pushing for a win ahead of the break.
Div Four will play at Wynyard where success has been on an even keel with individual skills improving, according to O’Halloran: “We must be able to adapt as well as the opposition to any green that is presented.”
